Lessons from Africa and beyond
Located at the junction of the Atlantic Ocean, the Sahara Desert and the sub-Saharan bush, Saint-Louis of Senegal (‘Ndar’ in Wolof) is, without a doubt, the best introduction to the discovery of French-speaking Africa. His name, Saint-Louis, was given in honor of the King of France Louis IX (1226-1270). With around 250,000 inhabitants today, Saint-Louis is made up of a peninsula between the Atlantic Ocean and the Senegal River, an island on the river and a rapidly expanding mainland
The island of Saint-Louis retains important evidence of its prestigious past. It is still today the city symbol of elegance and refinement in Senegal. Its glorious past resurfaces at the bends of its streets. Its architectural and cultural heritage is such that Saint-Louis of Senegal has been listed since 2000 as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Its famous Faidherbe bridge, which connects the island to the continent, was built in 1865 and rebuilt as an exact replica in 2011. It was the initiative of Governor Louis Faidherbe, engineer officer graduated from the Ecole Polytechnique in France.
Saint-Louis benefits from an exceptional natural environment. Located at the northern end of the Senegalese coast, it is the coolest city in the country; an almost ideal climate.
Less than an hour from the city center, there are two natural parks classified as World Heritage by UNESCO : the Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary (3rd ornithological reserve in the world) and the langue de Barbarie National Park on the edge of the ocean.
The Saint-Louisiennes, famous for their captivating beauty, have won over many men wherever they came from! Saint-Louisiens are, like Senegalese in general, very warm and welcoming: the famous teranga is erected here as a way of life.
Saint-Louis is the ideal starting point for exploring northern Senegal, the Senegal River region or the arid area of the Ferlo. Many excursions are thus possible. As for accommodation, many hotels and hotels and guest houses exist on the island, by the ocean or in the countryside.
